Marco Marella - Italy
I was born in Venice, Italy, where I still live and work, on a cold and snowy night of december 1962.
After my high school graduation as mechanical engineer (I can definitely affirm that for me school was useful in that it has made me clearly realize what i could never do) and some years spent in extemporaneous working experiences, ranging from ship boy on a cargo to army officer, I finally saw the light and decided to make the most of my downplayed natural gift for drawing and take up a career as an illustrator.
I then headed for London where I begun attending the Chelsea School of Art illustration evening classes.
I loved the school indeed but having in the meantime become a bit allergic to authority I very soon decided that working those same evening hours on my own studying art books and illustration annuals, and building myself a portfolio could be a better use of my time, so i therefore proudly consider myself a self taught artist.
I then went Back to Venice, where in 1988 I finally undertook my professional path.
Since then I received commissions in the advertising as well as in the editorial field, working for the most renowned italian, british and US publishers and magazines, so I guess I can now consider myself a...quite well seasoned artist! Lately i turned my attention to the glamorous licensing trade which gives me greater freedom, fun and what i think is a better use of my time, which i value a lot: i need spare time to refuel and give my best.
when i am not illustrating i really love to exert my creativity cooking for my family and friends, and stroll around the city that I'm lucky to live in and in whose color and shapes, smells and noises i find great inspiration.
My illustrations have been awarded from the italian Art Directors Club, from the italian and british associations of illustrators, have been published (among others) in the 'american illustration'annuals, in luetzer's archive '200 best illustrators worldwide', in 'illusive, the best of conteporary illustration', in '3x3' illustration annuals
