Marie Plotena was born on 21st February 1946 in Brno in the former Czechoslovakia. She graduated from the High School of Applied Arts in Brno, Studio of the Industrial Arts and then at the Department of Aesthetic Education at the Pedagogical Faculty of the Masaryk University in Brno. Several years she worked as a teacher at vocational art schools. However, more time she paid to the arts as a freelance artist. She is concentrated mainly to painting, drawing, cartooning and illustration. An important field of her creative work are "Roughed pastels" created by her own unique technique. She is a member of the Association 0, the Czech Union of Cartoonists, Brno Biennale Association, Icograda, Union of Artists and the Federation of European cartoonists. The artworks by Marie Plotena have been published in many periodicals at home and abroad. Her cartoons along with the roughed pastels became a part of the collections of many museums and property of private collectors. Marie Plotena associates in exceptional synthesis the simplicity of expression with abundance of ideas. From the nineties is her creative work enhanced with untraditionally elaborated biblical themes. Creative work of Marie Plotena has been presented at numerous individual (about 80) and collective exhibitions (more than 200) at home and abroad: where was successfully confronted with the artworks of domestic and foreign artists, especially cartoonists. She exhibited her artworks in Canada, Brazil, Mexico, USA, China, Japan: Taiwan, Malaysia and almost in all European countries. She also participated in several international painting symposia. Her artworks have won so far 24 awards, fifteen on the domestic scene and nine abroad. Marie Plotena lives and works in Brno in the Czech Republic.
