Balazs Gardi is a freelance photographer most well known for documenting the everyday lives of diverse communities in great need, traveling to the corners of the earth following inspiring stories. His worldwide independent expedition exploring the far-reaching consequences of the global water crisis has recently evolved into Azdarya, an online magazine solely dedicated to water.
In the past fifteen years, he has worked with numerous major corporate clients and has been published by leading editorial outlets. He was awarded the Willie Vicoy Fellowship/Reuters Foundation at the School of Journalism for Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University for academic studies in 2002 as well as the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in Rotterdam in 2000. Currently Balazs is a 2013 INK Fellow.
His photos have received many of the top awards by international juries such as the Global Vision Award from Picture of the Year International in 2009, the Bayeux Calvados Award For War Correspondents in 2008, the PX3 Photographer of the Year in 2008, the 1st Prize in the General News Series category from World Press Photo in 2008, as well as the 1st Prize in their General News Single category in 2008, and in 2002 he won the World Press Photo Sports Stories Award. He has been the recipient of the Magnum Emergency Fund Grantin 2011, the Alexia Foundation Grant for World Peace in 2006, and the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography in 2005.
