Gallery Of Painting By Andrew Salgado - Canada

London-based, Canadian artist Andrew Salgado (b. 1982) has recently created a buzz for himself internationally. His bold, gestural, figurative paintings are unique and hugely striking, bleeding emotion and raw energy. As interested in the formal properties of painting as well as in the subject, his paintings are vastly complex and evocative in both technique and subject matter.
Influenced by George Bataille’s writings on the correlation between animalism, violence and sexuality, Salgado’s paintings certainly evoke aggression and raw emotion, both in his approach to his subject and his aggressive treatment of the canvas. Bataille’s theories suggest that as humans we are simultaneously learned yet primarily animalistic, our urges are often at odds with the conventions of society, these theories are intrinsic in the emotional quality of his works.
An incident in 2008 in which Andrew Salgado and his partner were the victims of hate crime was a catalyst for the political perspective inherent in his work; his works are largely representative of a psychological struggle. Every brush stroke of Salgado’s works is related to the immediacy of his emotions and physical state at the time of its execution, in this is it possible to consider each work as a self-portrait, an extension of Salgado. Although portraits in the traditional sense of the word (his paintings are mostly all paintings of men), Salgado views portraiture as uni-dimensional, he is more interested in exploring the concept behind the subjects identity as well as in the purely abstract properties of paint.
Andrew Salgado is undoubtedly one of today’s most exciting artists, named by Saatchi in 2012 as one of the top artists to invest in, Salgado is definitely one to watch.
