Fernando Botero is a Colombian painter and sculptor who is known internationally for his highly recognizable style, which has become known as “Boterismo.” Botero often visualizes contemporary Latin American life or atrocities such as the violence of drug wars in his native Colombia, or American abuses of power in his Abu Ghraib series in his signature style.
His portraiture depicts the human form in exaggerated, or inflated proportions.
Much of his work can be viewed as political or social critique, yet he has denied any satirical intention with the use of rotund forms.
Born Fernando Botero Angulo on April 19, 1932 in Medellín, Colombia, the artist traveled widely during his youth: first to Bogota, then to Europe, where influence from masterpieces he saw in Barcelona, Madrid, Florence, and Paris can be seen in his work beginning in the 1960s. Based in Bogota, Museo Botero is comprised of work from the artist’s collection.
Botero currently lives and works in Monte Carlo, Monaco with residences in Paris, Pietrasanta, and Evia.
