Miguel Gallardo - Spain
I studied at the Massana School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona.
I started my professional career combining the comic with the illustration.
If you ask me what I do, I say that I translate into images what others think in words. Therefore, I am more translate than draftsman.
I work regularly with La Vanguardia , El País and different national and international magazines and publications.
To highlight the Herald Tribune , The New York Times and The New Yorker .
The latter I always have in the hall to impress the visitors.
I think and illustrate book covers for the main Spanish publishers.
Among the books I like to highlight What happens to this child and What's wrong with your brother , two guides of which I am co-author with Angels Ponce, on the disability for Full Inclusion Baleares and for MRW.
I consider myself an amateur, which is my favorite category, as it is more fun and gives you ample room to go wrong.
In spite of that, I won two prizes at the Barcelona Comic Fair, and in 2014 I was awarded the Grand Prix of the Barcelona Comic Fair for all my career.
The latter means that I have grown up.
I have also been awarded two awards by SND (Society of Newspaper Design), and I have obtained the Serra D'Or for the book What is wrong with this child to which I have a special affection.
My illustrations for La Vanguardia have been awarded the APIC press prize.
In 2007 I published Maria and I , a graphic novel that tells the adventures and travels with my 13 year old daughter Maria, who has autism.
For her I received the Premi Catalunya National de Comic.
This book, translated into eight languages, is a step forward in my career and the consolidation of my commitment to this disorder and the diffusion of its characteristics.
In 2009 a documentary about the book with the same title is made: Maria y yo, finalist at the Goya Awards.
I discover that with age, I like to think about the world more and more.
Since 2010, I also give talks and workshops around the world based on my experiences of communication with Mary.
In the year 2015 Maria was 20 years old .
Mary, my daughter, has taught me the simplicity of a line and everything it is capable of expressing.
